FAREWELL
1st February 1988 - The Square,
Harlow
The long blonde hair, the crazy guitar solos, the sheer kick-ass,
rock'n'roll-ness of it all this MUST be Acolytes Of The Sun
in concert!
After a lay off of nearly three months due to drummer Andy's
bout of appendicitis, the band reappear looking more confident
than at their November debut - prompting even Andy to smile
halfway through!
Walking on to a taped intro from 'A Fistful Of Dollars' -
which gets up everyone's noses after a few minutes - they
burst into their own short instrumental intro before the not-particularly-cryptically-entitled
"Get Down To Lovin'".
The repertoire has been expanded slightly since the debut
two and a half months ago and Paul's voice sounds better than
at the Tunnel, though for most of the set (well okay, ALL
of the set) he remains static at the front of the stage. The
band's playing is confident - well they've had enough time
to practice, after all - and the music soars, dips and swirls
until Jamie suddenly realises that drinking that last pint
so quickly was probably not such a good idea after all.
There's no "Jumpin' Jack Flash" or "Gimme Some Lovin'" tonight,
but they do treat us to a rendition of "Does Your Mother Know",
which makes you giggle when you realise you know every word.
Curiously though, no one I spoke to admitted to any familiarity
with this experience.
The set builds to a climax with "Crazy Horses" - complete
with flashing strobe for the manic ending and the band leave
the stage to cries of "encore!", etc...
On
leaving, Jamie rather untactfully informed Paul of his impending
departure, whereupon the poor bemused guy was left to stew
in his own bafflement.
The evening was rounded off nicely by a trip to North Weald
to drop off Philip "Wandering Hands" Macy and to witness the
spectacle of Jamie relieving himself in the beam of another
car's headlights.
Set: Intro, Get Down To Lovin', L.A. Bust (3-0-0-1), Does
Your Mother Know, Free Yourself (Trans European Excess), ?
(Slow And Poofy), Liberty (Body), Interstate (Meet Me (In
A Godforsaken Place)), Crazy Horses, Outro
